About the event
Join Women in Architecture for a site tour of the Acute Care Tower addition at the Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster. The addition/standalone project consists of a parkade (2 floors), back-of-house and service spaces (including a morgue), 9 floors of clinical treatment and patient rooms, a dedicated mid-height mechanical interstitial floor and 2 floors of rooftop mechanical and related equipment, and a rooftop heliport.
HDR and Ellis-Don Design-Build will lead us through the construction in progress: systems and methods for electrical, mechanical, IMIT, and clinical diagnostic equipment installation as well as regular construction techniques.
The construction is largely cast-in-place concrete slabs with secondary structural elements in structural steel and the cladding features a mix of aluminum composite panels, metal standing seam, and concrete masonry. Mass timber elements are mainly in the entry lobby and include glulam columns and CLT panel roof/ceiling elements.
As this is an active construction site, the tour will be held after regular site hours. All attendees must wear CSA-approved PPE including a hard hat, above the ankle steel-toed boots, eyewear, and gloves.
AIBC approved for 1 Core Learning Unit.
