About the event
Now in its 15th year, Spatial Poetics is an evening of experimental performance pieces in which artists are invited to create new performance-based work together and encouraged to work beyond their usual disciplines.
Curated by Powell Street Festival artistic director Mark Takeshi McGregor, this year's Spatial Poetics is inspired by Japanese ghost stories. The first half of the evening features Linda Uyehara Hoffman and Eileen Kage, presenting a new piece inspired by Spanish, First Nations, and Russian ghostlore. This new work fuses elements of human voice, taiko drumming, and live visual art.
The second half of the evening features dance artists Jay Hirabayashi and Barbara Bourget, and composer/performer Stefan Smulovitz. Their contribution to the evening combines movement, butoh dance, and solo viola in a chilling retelling of the Japanese folk tale, "Mujina, the Faceless Ghost."
