About the event
Join the Vancouver Art Gallery for a special PACE IN SPACE! walking session led by internationally acclaimed Mexican artist Pedro Reyes.
The PACE IN SPACE! walking session invites audiences to participate in a new kind of sport: the artist’s curated score of walks. Some walking styles include: “very small steps,” “chasing someone,” “at the museum,” “waiting in a line that is slowly moving,” “tightrope,” “tiptoe,” “pushing a heavy box,” “robot,” “zombie,” “ballerina,” “skip,” “runway,” “boxer,” “sore back,” “something in your shoe” and more. We invite participants to come in bold, colourful clothing and to be playful together!
The session will begin at the Vancouver Art Gallery’s Hornby Street entrance, will last roughly 20 minutes and will conclude at the Gallery (approximately 1km walk).
This program is in conjunction with the exhibition Offisite: Pedro Reyes at the Vancouver Art Gallery Offsite (1100 West Georgia Street). PACE IN SPACE! is a project about walking. Inspired by mythology, taxonomy and evolving technologies that seem to have a mind of their own, the sculptures in PACE IN SPACE! blur the lines between animal and machine. With humour, Reyes imagines a future where hybrid creatures walk among us. Who enjoys more space, the bodies with wheels or the bodies with legs? Like many of Reyes’ past projects, PACE IN SPACE! integrates participatory strategies that seek to engage community through play, humour and optimism.
PACE IN SPACE! Walking Session will be followed by an artist talk with Pedro Reyes at the Gallery, starting at 6:30 PM. Explore the Gallery for FREE on Free First Friday Nights presented by BMO, and head to Courtroom 302 for the artist talk afterwards!
Admission to the Gallery is FREE for everyone from 4 to 8 PM! Register for the event here.
