About the event

The Urban Studies Graduate Student Association at Simon Fraser University is hosting Democracy and the City, a forum focused on engagement, urban culture and democratic innovation.

This inaugural student-led conference will host community members, students, academics and professionals who are working to make our city and region more democratic. Together we will explore how, and why, urban regions are desirable sites for inclusive forms of democratic governance.

Throughout the day we will moderate several panel discussions and invite keynote speakers to present their research. Some of the themes we will discuss are youth engagement, urban culture, and democracy as a practice. Finally, our forum will conclude with a discussion on innovations in democracy, and how the city form lends itself to encouraging new means for public participation and civic life.

We hope you will join us for a discussion about democracy and the city!
