About the event

Heritage House Tour pre-tour lecture with Michael Kluckner

A century ago, half of Vancouver’s population rented. Today, that proportion is unchanged, yet the city is so physically different it’s hard to imagine it as the same place. In an illustrated talk, Michael Kluckner takes a look at Vancouver’s apartment and condo history in two parts. Michael begins with the evolution of the apartment building, from humble flats above stores to the luxurious suites of the 1920s, the walk-ups of the 1940s and the high-rises of the 1960s. He also explores the social changes in the city – the passage in 1966 of the Strata Title Act, as well as other forms of collective ownership of buildings – that have turned tenants into owners and investors into landlords. 2 Non-core LU’s AIBC

After the lecture, join us on June 7th for the Heritage House Tour where we will look at 9 heritage properties, including 2 apartment complexes. See the historic Queen Charlotte in the West End, a beautiful art deco building in the epicenter for rental living in Vancouver. You’ll be invited into several private apartments with different layouts, all with different levels of retention and modernization, including a unit converted from what was once a grand lobby space. For contrast we’ll also open the converted BEST Building, now called The Exchange, originally the home of the BC Telephone Company. The retained historic building now contains loft style apartments with massive wood beams and exposed brick.
