About the event

The Premise

Vancouver welcomes the most successful global thought leaders, real estate and development influencers and industry innovators to share concepts that impact our city now and into the future. For a third year in a row, the meeting of these great minds will be held at the legendary Playhouse Theatre where they will share their ideas and reveal opportunities they see in the Greater Vancouver market.

Each year, RED Talks curators select an idea theme important to Vancouver. The chosen theme provides a backdrop to the dialogue, conversations and debates on the stage and within the experience. Explore this year’s idea theme: Confronting Consensus.

Doors at 5:30pm and Presentation at 6:30

From activism to pacifiers: The spectrum of city decision-making

Bike lanes, building permits, business licenses. 18 storeys or 48 storeys? Tree-line boulevards pitted against park space for families. The role of data versus the use of intuition. How does a city perfect its decision-making to create the happiest, most liveable place for its citizens?

The spectrum of democracy, from decisive leadership to harmonious consensus can prove tricky. Combined with hugely varying expectations of its dwellers, city design is also heavily influenced by both protective NIMBY and inclusive YIMBY attitudes. What does this mean for the future of Vancouver?

Join RED Talks for stories on city leadership and urban decision-making, the need for neighbourhood advocacy and a test of the question: do you care what happens in your backyard?
