About the event

Architect Mitch Sakumoto from Merrick Architecture has been managing the consultant design team for the Single Room Occupancy (SRO) Housing Renewal Initiative Project by BC Housing/Partnerships BC. The scope of work for these buildings is to upgrade and renovate all mechanical, electrical, fire protection, life safety systems including seismic upgrades and to also provide a 15-year maintenance plan. All 13 buildings will receive significant heritage rehabilitation and restoration upgrades to the exterior facades and some will include retention and restoration of significant interior elements. Mitch will update us on the status of the project and speak about completed sites such as the Marble Arch Hotel, Gastown Hotel, Washington Hotel, Cordova Residences and the Rice Block, describing problems that have occurred while undertaking these extensive renovation projects. Of the 13 buildings on the list, 5 have been completed, 5 more will be completed by early 2016 and all buildings will be complete by mid-2016 to provide housing for Vancouver’s low income and vulnerable populations.
