About the event

upport Vancouver’s built heritage by attending our biggest fundraising effort of the year! The Heritage House Tour is a great way to explore inside wonderful examples of our city’s heritage and character homes, while supporting VHF in raising funds for our ongoing conservation and education efforts.

In 2016 we offer the chance to take a look at an incredible collection of historic and heritage homes across the city. Ticket holders will guide themselves around the city and tour inside heritage and character homes of varying age, scale and retention. From incredibly well-retained with intriguing historic details such as push button light switches, service call buttons and back service stairwells, to beautifully updated with modern kitchens and bathrooms, the 2016 tour offers a chance to see inside a variety of Vancouver’s historic homes.

See how one owner has used their incredible collection of Asian and African artwork and furnishings to blend seamlessly with an almost entirely untouched 1913 Arts & Crafts home. Tour inside three estate homes built for Vancouver’s elite, one fully renovated, one well-retained with impressive gardens and one empty for nine years but now on the verge of redevelopment. You’ll also learn about the many variations of the Craftsman home with several examples of this popular architectural style. If you enjoy Modernist architecture, you will also not want to miss the one of a kind Barber Residence. Built in 1936, it is one of the city’s few examples of Art Moderne residential architecture.

This self-guided tour gives you a whole day to get yourself to the homes and talk with homeowners, architects and experts in construction and heritage. The guidebook offers the fascinating history of each home, along with several essays written by leading historians that offer the back story of our city and give better understanding to where our city was when these homes were built. See how others are living in heritage and get inspiration for your own project, marvel at the creativity and diversity of options found in character and heritage homes and go back in time by immersing yourself in our city’s historic architecture.
